Rivendell compared to conventional development methods

about

There are currently two broad methods by which a website can be made ‘dynamic’, they typically fall into one of these two categories:

1) Custom built

Custom-built websites require the following to be created for each dynamic application. Websites and web based application developed in this way can meet the client’s requirements exactly but require greater technical expertise and discipline in order to produce consistent quality. There are many different technologies and methods of achieving a similar end result, making it virtually impossible to asses the quality and robustness of the systems.

2) Standard Software

Standard software is by definition consistent and can therefore be ‘quality’ assured. Unfortunately standard software, when applied to high end website development, rarely meets all a customers requirements. To achieve the desired result, multiple smaller software packages are cobbled together or one huge expensive system is installed even though 90% of the system is not actually used. Neither case is ideal as they are often cumbersome for their intended use and again, difficult to measure from a quality standpoint.

The Rivendell Solution

Rivendell combines the best components of multiple open source technologies and projects into a single integrated application development tool. Rivendell staff continually asses, combine and test available technologies in order to constantly improve the quality and functionality provided. In effect Rivendell provides tried and tested best of breed technologies in a neatly packaged system that enables web builders to create database driven websites with complete flexibility. Rivendell’s felxibility and power is derived from its simple, yet elegant use of XML ‘recipes’ to determine exactly how each website works. The XML recipe controlls how Rivendell behaves, by changing the XML you can create virtually and database driven application in hours rather than days. This approach reduces development time and improves quality. Quality is further improved through the provision of best practice modules, each module consisting of the required XML and layout code. Developers simply install Rivendell on their servers and start developing websites.
